Finsemble: Follow the Fish's Anatomy Through the Fragments

Jigsaw illustrations of fish provide directional clues in fins, eyes, and body contours as well as color.

Find the front of the animal

Finsemble describes assembling colorful fish illustrations. A recognizable eye or mouth can establish which way a fish faces, giving nearby fragments an orientation within the picture. Start with whatever anatomical feature is actually visible rather than assuming every puzzle offers an easy corner piece. Once the head direction is clear, the curved body outline becomes easier to interpret than a group of isolated blue or orange patches.

Distinguish a fin from background texture

A narrow colored shape might be a fin, a plant, or another detail in the illustration. Compare its edge and attachment point with the surrounding fragments. A fin has a relationship to a body; a floating patch of the same color does not establish that relationship on its own. This is especially useful in an underwater scene where repeated flowing shapes can make unrelated pieces look deceptively similar.

Use the growing silhouette as a reference

As the fish takes shape, inspect the whole outline periodically. Ask whether the next fragment extends the body, completes a fin, or belongs outside the animal. Those are different placement questions and can narrow the search for a matching region. The stored description does not specify rotation or piece counts. Follow the actual placement controls, and let the developing illustration provide increasingly concrete evidence for where the remaining fragments belong.
